Recording ambient sounds..
Ambient sounds are background noise which will fill up the audio so there is no silence on the clips. They can be anything, wind or just general noise although they're not dialog or sound effects. I used the noise of the corridor behind my clips to make sure there was no silence through out my clips. for hunger games they used a software called atmos. An advantage you have from a recording on scene rather from a computer generated sound library is that you can make the sound just how you want it to your clip, you can also achieve a proper metallic sound using metals in foley sound. Hard cuts a ill advised as if you cut the sound then it would completely ruin the mood which the ambient sounds are creating, fading the music works a lot better if you are going to cut a clip.
Recording dialog.
For Recording dialog you will want to get the microphone as close as possible to the subjects mouth to get the clearest audio you can. Looping is post production dubbing it means that if they mess up the recording the first time then they will go back later and use a studio to record the dialog this is normally a lot clearer, although then you will have to sync with clips.
