Composing music for film P1

Describe how Hans Zimmer and Christopher Nolan worked together to create the music for the Dark Knight?

when Hans was going a bit too far in the music composing Christopher nolan would always push him as he knew about the nature of the sounds he was playing with he knew what he wanted out of the music composure.

What was the process that Hans Zimmer used to come up with the music?

Hans tried to make the music the most minimal thing which would get the point across. they needed something which someone could hear and now with a second of it that it was a bad thing or something was lurking. they had to record all kinds of sounds.

What was Hans Zimmers intention when making this soundtrack?

Hans intention was to make a sound which people hated and didn't like to hear, as that would make them hate the character, as the joker is a very evil character he needed to make something provocative so people could really hate it.

What qualities did Hans Zimmer want the music to have?

He wanted the music to be soo minimal to say exactly what he wanted it to say so once you heard the smallest bit of it that the character was about and that something bad was too happen. he wanted to get rid of everything which associated with the bad guy and have a new approach with the idea of anarchy. he needed it to be a personal performance of the joker and had to be a sound which would be very close to you.

How do you feel about the final score and explain why you feel it works/doesn’t work?

I think what Hans Zimmer did was incredible in a couple of notes and just a rising tension it working incredibly well nothing even needs to happen and you feel as something is about and something is building up inside ready to bounce as any point in time.

5 point guide:

1. Make sure you fully understand what you are composing the music for. The feel and mood of the scene.

2. Make Sure you're in full contact with the person you're making the piece for, they know what they want.

3. Experiment to produce an original sound which will do exactly what you want it to do within the film.

4. Try and sync the BPM to how fast the scene is.

5. Keep it original. Originality is very important when creating a unique piece for a movie.

Research into Recording Ambient Sounds and Dialogue P1

Recording ambient sounds..
Ambient sounds are background noise which will fill up the audio so there is no silence on the clips. They can be anything, wind or just general noise although they're not dialog or sound effects. I used the noise of the corridor behind my clips to make sure there was  no silence through out my clips. for hunger games they used a software called atmos. An advantage you have from a recording on scene rather from a computer generated sound library is that you can make the sound just how you want it to your clip, you can also achieve a proper metallic sound using metals in foley sound. Hard cuts a ill advised as if you cut the sound then it would completely ruin the mood which the ambient sounds are creating, fading the music works a lot better if you are going to cut a clip.

Recording dialog.
For Recording dialog you will want to get the microphone as close as possible to the subjects mouth to get the clearest audio you can. Looping is post production dubbing it means that if they mess up the recording the first time then they will go back later and use a studio to record the dialog this is normally a lot clearer, although then you will have to sync with clips.

Foley sound. P1

What is a foley artist, what do they do and why are they needed? A foley artist is needed as the film producers can't get all sounds recorded by microphones, there are mics on the actors recording their voice which keep out other sounds so they don't get messed up by background noise. if they record foley sounds they can keep good loud dialog with no problems and add sound.
Explain the order in which the Foley artist creates the sound (mention the 'prop pass')?
Start off with the main character footsteps then background. everything moving on screen will of needed foley sound.

What are the key skills and qualities foley artists need to have?
a very large creative mind, you need to make sure you can do the timing to each sound.
What is the advantage of using real objects to create sound FX rather than using digital production or sound libraries?
you can build upon what you want the sound to sound like, you are able to create a real metallic sound by using actual metal objects not produced on computers.
Using specific examples describe how key sounds are created (use the Star Wars and Robin Hood clips if you want).
sounds can be created by going out and about to record real sounds, this means the sounds are relatable to the viewer and they feel like its more real. sounds will be recorded from animals, factories and engines.

Music copyright issues P1

1) Right of use
Publishing rights -
If the Music you're intending to you has already been released and published through a label, then you must get consent to legally use their music in your movie if you want to use their composition.
Recording rights-
You must get a license from the people/person who originally recorded the track. You will need to hunt down the owner and ask them for permission.

If you don't get license to use music off the owner/creator you can face trying to be sued by the owner as you will be selling their work without their permission.

You will need to make sure you clear any music used, if background music has been captured Eg. a Radio. if it was unintentional music and has been kept to add atmosphere it is incidental. If the music has been intentionally used and put in place you will need to gain clearance to use it.

If the Creator of the music has died you will need to source out the owner of the piece in most cases it will be the record label which the artist was signed to when they made the track.

What is creative commons?
CC means that the piece of material has creative commons it means it can be taken and reused in anyway and remixed legally without getting any clearance from the creator.
It exists so Artists who want their work to be able to reused and made more popular by other using it over and over again.
6 Types of CC

CC BY : this means that other people can change, tweak and remix but only if they give credit to the original creator.
CC BY NC ND: This means people can share work and download although they must give credit and must not sell your work in anyway.
CC BY NC SA:  This lets others change and tweak the creators work but they cannot use it commercially and must give credit to the original creator.
CC BY NC: This means that others can change and tweak the original work non commercially and they must tell the original creator before doing anything.
CC BY SA: Often compared to copyright free, this lets anyone change tweak and remix and will be on the same license. The work can also be used commercially
CC BY ND:This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to you.

My Music choice
I Created my soundtrack myself using garage band loops this way i could get the right BPM i wanted for my clip and would set the mood to how I wanted it. My music piece was very basic featuring one sound effect a long with a hip hop drum beat.
As i made my music i did not need to get any permission to use it.

submarines sound P1

Oliver is trying to find his personal purpose as he believes that everyone has a purpose, with the non-diegetic music's restlessness and busy nature it really helps us understand his mood and feeling over what he is doing.
The aldonte tempo (walking speed) gives a mellow feel to the clip and keeps everything calm so its like his thoughts are just casual and what he does, not that hes in a bad mood hes just letting the girl know how to avoid being bullied as he feels bad for her. he wants to help the girl and with the calm music we can tell that he is doing a more heart to heart kind of letter to her, and that he doesn't mean and bad feelings.

after effects.

In After effects i did my three effects.
- Running through a wall
- running really fast
- teleporting through the floor
I achieved these effects by using masks and layer transformation eg. opacity.
the effects where pretty easy to do although it did take time to make them look up to standard and make them look like they were actually happening
For the First effect of falling through the fall I used a time remapping to make it speed up and then carefully masked around luke as he fell into the floor, and key framed the mask and changed it to make him disappear.
For the second effect i firstly time remapped the time to speed it up then i would add a mask so when i added the blur it wouldn only blur at certain points.
Third and final effect it was a simple walk through wall effect it was just a mask so i masked myself out of the shot when i got to the wall.

metadata P1

I arranged my clips by scene and name, i havent got all the footage yet so its not all on the metadata.

todays problem

the best thing which has happened to my projects was that i was able to add some great continuity editing without realising while filming.

I accidentally quit my projects without saving, although i still had some saved this meant i had less time this meant i had to re do what i had added.
As i had already done the bit which had been deleted when i quick i knew exactly what to do when redoing it so i was quick at it.

30 min ting

Updated My floor fall effect with better masking and In taking more time made the effect look better.

Rough Cut Self approval P1

Audio-
I had not finished my Rough cut and had not edited any of the audio so the first step will be to actually make a start to the audio and then see what is wrong with it to make any improvements to the audio.
Special effects-
my special effects were good, although masks were visible so if i take more time keyframing each point of the mask i could perfect my effects to look really realistic and with out using bad stock footage of a glowing ball or something tacky like that.
Sequence-
My sequence was not fully finished, We have no filmed all of the footage for it to be a complete sequence although we found that the shot list was not going to make a easily followable sequence of footage so we had to cut some shots out.

last production meeting. VFX P1

We need to finish filming with Tim Whitaker as his timetable is tight we have not had that much time with him but time is getting tight so we need to get it filmed quick especially as Edwyn and Anni are going to NY. We also need to finish the editing with all three effects, complete a audio track within garage band as then we can avoid messing about with any copyrights as we'll be using our own soundtrack, we'll need to perfect the slow motion effects with more key frames to make sure it is as clean as possible and there are no lines where you can tell that the layers have been composited/masked.

Rough cut Peer Feedback P1

From my Rough cut feedback all i really got from it was that i need to finish the edit as it was not finished when uploaded.
I also should take some more time making my masks on my effects better so it doesn't look bad around the edges of the mask.

roughcut P1

Due to After effects to premiere problems, my rough cut was not finished. sounds not finished i just had to upload what i had.

Post production.

Post production houses are companies which do work for clients such as Video mastering, Graphics design and digital imaging. Clients range from musicians to film makers. And they work with their client to produce the perfect possible product to create great results. An example of a post production house.

ILM has been co-operating with film companies for 35 years, working and designing special effects for many famous films. ILM has achieved 23 Sci-tech awards, 15 oscars and 275 films using just their own company also working with film companies. The company design and create special effects for films (visual effects) Some of the work that they develop includes: digitalising cartoons, enhancing stage make-up for example: Star wars: VII the ILM team used the original costumes made and enhanced them to create more of a realistic and intense costume. ILM was founded in 1975 by a man called George Lucas who also owns Lucas film and is the creator of the well known film Star Wars Trilogy and the Indiana jones films. By making special effects, the company designs special features for a movie which creates an out of this world/ futuristic for the audience to adapt and inspire new ideas as a general entertainment for viewers of the century.

Misfits analysis P1

Misfits analysis:
we are introduced to the characters in the first episode we can see that each character are either stereotypical types of people such as Chav or slag, although a couple of the characters are more quiet or just seem more normal compared to the other stereotypes. Special effects are used although they're a bit cheesy such as the storm and the characters falling over with the blank black background. other special effects were small such as the hail stones the size of tennis balls although they were done well.
The sound effects:
first of all it was everyday noises which where in the first episode apart from the stormy weather and the big hail coming down from the sky and hitting the ground these noises would've needed to be added in afterward as they were special effects, foley sound or computer generated sounds would've been needed to create this sound.

Today,

Today we recorded shot 1 and 2.
1 was easy to do as it was a still establishing shot of the college although by the time we had took the shot it was dark so i had to add colour correction.
We took the second shot although due to us being a "noise issue" we could not complete the shot.
Left window is unedited with no effects. right with curves colour correction.

Health and Safety P1

Today we had a chat with gary woolley the safety man at long road about how we should take health and safety in to consideration when filming around the college. we should not climb on unsteady objects such as the rotten bench. We were also told that we should be careful about slipping on many surface's such as moss on the floor and on the bricks. Although its common sense, he told us not to climb on top of the college to film, we could fall and break bones.. Same for trees.
Mud was another problem as it was slippery as Gary said he had slipped in his garden and broken his ligaments.

matte painting. P1

Matte painting is where a artist will paint a 2 dimensional picture, and the picture will be filmed behind several 3 dimensional elements to give it depth. Its a alternative to the green screen although this method does not need extra editing after filming the raw footage because the background is filmed and not put in at the editing stages.

How did matte painting develop?
Matte painting started off by artists using paints or pastels on a big glass screen so it could be put into live footage. Big scenes could not be created by props or scenery.
In 1907 Norman Dawn developed the technique so he could combine a photograph and painting to improve the environment taken by the camera. Films in the 1900's have been using Matte painting before green screening there was no Chroma keying software about, so being able to film a scene or shot with the background already painted in was the main option for many film producers.

3 examples.

A well known matte painted movie scene was the tractor beam sucking in the rebel ship into the empire's star destroyer in the first star wars.

in the mid 80's computer generating graphics allowed matte painters to work digitally on computers.
Chris Evans in 1985 for Sherlock Holmes made a painting for a scene featuring computer generated animation, it was a animation of a night jumping through a stained glass window.

In 1990 Die Hard: die harder was the first film to use digitally composed live-action footage with a traditional glass matte painting which had been photographed and scanned into a computer,
it was the last scene which took place on a airport runway.

QA

Disaster
Q2. Will the examiner read every sheet in our folder to make sure it makes sense. Yes they will.
Minor
Q8. Will we have enough lesson time to render our finished videos as edited videos can take days to render? Render early enough.
Q3. What if the actors don't do their jobs well? Make sure you employ someone who you know can do the job and won't mess about.
Q5. What if the overall sequence doesn't look good? Keep a Editable file to make sure after render you can edit.
Q7. Worried about not being good at filming the footage. Practise before hand or a simple fix is use a tripod.
inconvenient
Q1. Worried about no being able to do effects. Other members can do effects and help out.
Q4. What if work isn't finished on time? Work tight to the schedule do not go off track.
Q6. The amount of shot we have compared to the scenes(2). the photoanamatic will show the shots so look back at it before recording.
Q7. Worried about not being good at filming the footage. Practise before hand or a simple fix is use a tripod.

Casting notes

Characters:
Felix- Edwyn John
Felix is a innocent teen-age boy with a power but has no use of it he doesn't think anything of it although he is very ambitious in getting a use for his power.
Professor Albatross - ????
The professor is a happy guy although there is a dark side to him but also a dark side to the college we need someone old, who can play a enthusiastic old professor yet at the same time will be evil and has a all powerful power.
Dr. albitum- Anni sims
She's a happy enthusiastic teacher although she has another side to her and this needs to show in the actors personality although she has to be innocent at the same time like she knows although she doesn't.

Production meeting #1 P1

Roles/discrete roles.
We decided to put casting and discrete roles together as we will need to find people to do roles as well as discrete roles.
We are still in the process of finding people to play in our movie introduction, we do not have a clue in who we want to get to play although we have a vague idea of the personalities we need for our characters. We will need a Sly professor someone who you can see has a separate personality which we can tell that there is other side to his character. For Felix we need someone who seems innocent although is ambitious and can achieve a friendly personality easily. For Dr. Albitum we need a friendly woman who also seems a bit weird and has more to her than what she appears to be as the college has a different side to what is actually is we need to achieve this through the characters personalities.
For our discrete roles we need just random students/teachers just to fill the shots and in our second scene we will not need any extra roles as it'll be in the principals office and no outside.
Schedule:
